Matthew was raised in Dunwoody, Georgia while his father attended the University of Georgia, after which his family moved to Dallas, Texas where Stanford attended Highland Park High School, and where he started his sports career. Even then, he was considered to be one of the best high school quarterbacks in the whole USA in the matriculating class of 2006. He had already been praised for his performances and named to the “Parade” All-America Team and the USA Today Pre-Season Super 25 in 2005. The same year he won the MVP and Best Arm awards and was named the 2005 EA Sports National Player of the Year.
Matthew enrolled the University of Georgia where he played for the “Bulldogs” team, during which he was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice during 2006 season, Rivals.com’s National Freshman of the Week and 2006 SEC Coaches’ All-Freshman Team. In 2009, he decided to give up his senior season and enter the 2009 NFL Draft; analyst Mel Kiper, Jr. predicted that he would become the first pick in the Draft, and so it proved – in April 2009, Stafford signed a six-year contract with the Detroit Lions, at over $41 million guaranteed the largest to that point, and what a start to his net worth!
Season 2011 turned out to be the best in his career, as he was named a Pro Bowl alternate for the NFC after the 2011 NFL season and the 2011 Pro Football Weekly Comeback Player of the Year. In July 2013, he agreed to renew his contract with the Lions for another three years, at $53 million with $41 million guaranteed. At the beginning of 2015, it was announced that Matthew was selected for his first Pro Bowl appearance.
Thanks to his outstanding career he is the holder of 17 NFL records, including youngest quarterback to throw five or more touchdowns in a single game, most passing attempts in a season, fastest player to reach 25 000 career passing yards and many more.
Apart from his sports career, Matthew has a weekly segment on “The Mitch Albom Show” on Detroit radio station WJR.
When it comes to his private life, Stafford and his longtime girlfriend, Kelly Hall, whom he met at the University of Georgia, married in April 2015.
