Dive (move) - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokmon encyclopedia

Dive (Japanese: ダイビング Diving) is a damage-dealing Water-type move introduced in Generation III. It was HM08 in Generation III, HM06 in Generation V and HM07 in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. In Generation VIII, it is TM45.

Effect

In battle

The user dives underwater and becomes protected against most moves during the first turn, known as a semi-invulnerable turn, and then the user deals damage in the second turn.

Surf and Whirlpool are able to hit a submerged Pokémon, dealing twice the regular damage in all generations except in Generation IV, where the move's power is doubled instead (resulting in virtually the same effect).

The user can also be hit underwater if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader, or if either the attacker or the submerged Pokémon has No Guard.

Sandstorm, hail, and Shadow Sky will not cause damage during the semi-invulnerable turn.

If the user is holding a Power Herb, this item is consumed and Dive will be executed in one turn.

If a Cramorant with Gulp Missile uses Dive (or Surf), it catches prey and changes forms, unless it already caught prey or is Dynamaxed.

Generation III

Dive's base power is 60.

Pokémon can be caught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Dive.

Dive can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Surf to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn. It can also be used to finish a combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points if Rain Dance or Surf was used in the previous turn.

Generation IV onwards

Dive's base power was raised to 80.

Pokémon can no longer be caught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Dive.

Outside of battle

Main article: Underwater

Dive allows the player to go underwater in dark patches of water. This requires the player to be traveling on water using Surf. Conversely, if the player is already diving underwater, then Dive allows them to go back to the surface in patches illuminated by light from above.

Dive is usable either from the party, or by pressing A while being in a place where this move is usable (either when surfing in the dark patch or when diving under the light from above).

The only regions in which these spots (and the HM itself) have been seen are Hoenn and Unova. Thus, it is only an HM in Generations III, V, and VI.

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Mind Badge is required to use Dive outside of battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Dive gives the user the diving status on the first turn. While the user is underwater, the Pokémon cannot be hit by moves, except with Surf and Whirlpool. Projectiles will also pass the user as if their tile was empty. On the second turn, the user attacks enemy in the front. In the Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad series, the move's damage is doubled at the end of damage calculation.

This move can be used only on a water tile (including the shallow water in water dungeons); it will fail if used on any other type of tile. If the water was drained with Drought Orb while in middle of Dive, the user will still attempt to attack, but fail due to not being on a water tile. Due to being a two-turn move, this move cannot be linked. Dive cannot be used in a Pokémon Tower in the Adventure Squad series.

In Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, Dive is a TM. However, no Pokémon are technically compatible with it as it was not a TM in the Generation IV core series games; the only Pokémon who can use it are those who already learn Dive via level-up due to the game's logic allowing Pokémon to learn TM moves if they learn them via level-up, even if they are not actually compatible with the TM itself.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Dive is Cramorant's first move. It is obtained by reaching level 6 and upgrading Whirlpool into it instead of Surf. The user turns the designated area into a puddle, then dives to that area, shoving and damaging enemies in the area. The user catches prey for Gulp Missile as they emerge from the puddle. Holds 3 uses in reserve. There is a 1.5 sec cooldown between charges, which is reduced with cooldown reduction. At level 13, the move's damage is increased.

Gyarados's Unite Move, Dragon Current, is similar to Dive.
